WEST HARTFORD, Conn.— The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) placed ninth in both the men's and women's standings for the distinguished Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Commissioner's Cup for the 2018-2019 academic year, as announced by GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh Thursday afternoon.
The GNAC Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the member institution achieving the highest level of athletic success throughout the academic year. It is based upon a point system, and standings are determined by percentages in order to reflect the number of GNAC sports that each member sponsors.
Schools receive five points for winning a GNAC Championship, four points for advancing to a conference title game, three points for competing in a GNAC Semifinal, two points for qualifying for a GNAC Tournament, or one point for sponsoring the sport.
The Blue Jays have finished as high as seventh in the last five years, including two ninth and two 11th place finishes. USJ Men's Athletics placed ninth of 12 GNAC schools in their first year of competition, highlighted by the incredible playoff run from the men's basketball team, who became the first ever seven seed to make it to the GNAC Championship. They placed runner-up to Albertus Magnus College (AMC), who have won seven of the last 12 GNAC Men's Basketball Titles.
Women's athletics also placed ninth out of 13 schools, catapulted by softball's GNAC Championship earlier this month. The Blue Jays, who were picked fourth in the preseason polls, earned the number two seed in the GNAC South Division, and went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, in route to the third GNAC title in school history (Women's Basketball 1997-98, Softball 2000).
