Patti Sciglimpaglia Named GNAC Rookie of the Year

WEST HARTFORD – University of Saint Joseph freshman Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and was one five Blue Jays to make the All-Conference team, it was announced Monday.

Sciglimpaglia and Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) were Second Team selections at outfield and junior Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) was Second Team at infield. Senior Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) was Third Team at infield and freshman Haley McCall was Third Team at designated player.

Sciglimpaglia batted a team-high .395 and also led the Blue Jays with 16 doubles. She scored 27 runs and had 28 RBI. On the mound, she went 14-6 with a 2.69 ERA and struck out 111 batters in 119.2 innings.

Hummel batted .387 with 31 runs scored, 33 RBI and a team-best .434 on base percentage. As a pitcher, she was 14-5 with a 2.85 ERA. Hummel finished her career as USJs all-time leader in hits (176) and RBI (93).

Gall batted .348 with team-highs of six home runs and 36 RBI. She also had 12 doubles and 29 runs scored. The six home runs was a single-season school record and she pushed her career record to 15 this season.

Valerio batted .352 with 30 runs scored and a team-best 15 stolen bases. She is the USJ career leader in runs scored (104).

McCall batted .324 with 15 doubles. She had a team-high 35 runs scored and was second on the team with 11 steals. 

USJ finished 32-12 and set a new school record for wins. The Blue Jays finished third in the GNAC and were one of the final three teams left in the league tournament.
