WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph tennis team hosts Albertus Magnus Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 3:15 p.m. in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament match.
USJ finished the regular season 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the GNAC and closed with five consecutive victories. The Blue Jays earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Albertus is having its best season ever and finished 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the GNAC to earn the No. 5 seed.
Tara Smith (Palmer, Mass.) finished with a team-best 9-2 singles record for USJ and Sakinah Abdulsalam (Bristol, Conn.) and Ashley Savino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) each had six wins. All three primary doubles teams, Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, Conn.) and Lucy Roberge (Willington, Conn.) at No. 1, Abdulsalam and Savino at No. 2 and Leah Nguyen (West Hartford, Conn.) and Natalia Rozio (Newington, Conn.) at No. 3, each earned six wins during the season.
USJ is in the tournament for the third year in a row and sixth time in the past nine seasons. Albertus qualified for just the second time in program history. The Blue Jays defeated Albertus 7-2 in the regular-season match-up Oct. 6 at USJ.
