Blue Jays Sweep Cross Country Awards

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – For the second time this season, University of Saint Joseph runners swept the weekly Corvias/Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s cross-country awards.

USJ junior Kaneen Gomez-Hixson (Wethersfield, Conn.) was named the Runner of the Week and Mia Tompkins (Meriden, Conn.) was named the Rookie of the Week for the period ending, Oct. 18, it was announced Monday.

The pair also won the awards simultaneously on Oct. 5. For Gomez-Hixson, it is the third time this season she has been honored as the conference’s Runner of the Week. Tompkins was honored as Rookie of the Week for the third week in a row and fourth time this season.

Gomez-Hixson finished third of 141 runners with a personal-best 5K of 19:34 Saturday at the Western New England University Invitational. Tompkins was seventh in a time of 20:10. The Blue Jays finished fourth of 16 schools in the team competition.

Two meets remain on the season for USJ. The Blue Jays will compete at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Meet Sat. Oct. 31 at Standish, Maine and the New England Division-III Meet Sat. Nov. 14 in New London.
