WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Raiders of Rivier University (RIV), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on the USJ Field Hockey Field, in the Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
Both teams sported pink-colored socks and accessories for the match, while team representatives were acknowledged before the contest for making the Breast Cancer Awareness Game possible. The Blue Jays played hard from start to finish but could not find a way to score in this one, as the Raiders put up the first goal in the third minute of action. Rivier outshot USJ, 13-3, and had an, 11-3, edge in penalty corners. Sophomore goalie and captain Wendy Bowden (Old Saybrook, Conn.) made five saves, but for the second time this season, the Blue Jays allowed a goal in each period of the match.
COACH QUOTE [Karen Nell] "We were very happy to have such a great turnout for our 'Pink Day'. The West Hartford fourth graders did a wonderful job at halftime. We will regroup and get ready for our matchup with Elms on Wednesday."
The USJ Field Hockey team will look to bounce back with a GNAC road contest against the Blazers of Elms College on Wednesday, October 20 at 4:00 p.m. in Chicopee, Mass.
