WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph men's basketball team won its 14th straight game, defeating the visiting Rivier University Raiders, 101-66, inside the O'Connell Center in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Blue Jays improve to 15-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in the GNAC. USJ is back in action next on Wednesday in a highly anticipated matchup at intrastate and GNAC rival No. 21 Albertus Magnus.
Sophomore guard Delshawn Jackson Jr. (Hartford, Conn.) led the Blue Jays with a game-high 26 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor, hitting 5-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc, and also connecting on 11-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe. Joining 'DJ' in double figures for USJ, were freshman guard Taelon Martin (Springfield, Mass) and junior forward Jordan Powell (Middletown, Conn.) who finished with 17 points and 13 points, respectively. Martin was an efficient 8-for-11 from the floor off the bench, highlighted by five vicious dunks that got the crowd on their feet each time inside a sold-out O'Connell Center.
Sophomore point guard Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) also logged an impressive stat line, finishing with nine points, 13 assists, five rebounds, and five steals. It marks the second consecutive game he has logged double digit assists, breaking the program-record he set earlier in the week versus Suffolk when he finished with 12 helpers. Sophomore forward Kumar Brown (Enfield, Conn.) was also key for the Blue Jays off the bench, posting eight points and grabbing a game-high and career-high 10 rebounds in the win.
Rivier was paced by senior guard Issaiah Chappell (Sunapee, N.H.) who finished with a team-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-7 from three. Junior forward Jack McCarthy (Rowley, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points (8-9 FT), a team-high six rebounds, and four assists.
