Cadets Can't Be Stopped, Defeat Blue Jays 13-0

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team was shutout for the first time in program history Tuesday afternoon, as the defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion, Norwich University, controlled the game throughout, winning 13-0 on the USJ Lacrosse Field.

The Blue Jays made it past the halfway mark of the first period without giving up a goal. From there the avalanche started, as eight different Cadets combined for 13 goals, including sophomore attack Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) and senior midfielder Russell Gilligan (Fountain Hills, Ariz.), who scored three goals each. Norwich put up five more goals in the second quarter to go up 7-0 at the half, never looking back. Freshman midfielder Nick Grant (Berlin, Conn.) led the way for USJ with five shots on goal. The Cadets won an impressive 14 of 17 faceoffs, to just three for the Blue Jays.

COACH QUOTE [Andrew Fink]
"The size and speed of Norwich was just too much of our guys today. Give credit to them, their defense was great. I am proud of my guys though, they gave everything they had to try and compete. That is all you can ask for."

KEY MOMENTS

  • After a scoreless first eight minutes of hard-nosed action, the Cadets got on the board with two goals in just over a minute, the latter by Campbell all on his own. 2-0 NU after one period.
  • Business picked up in the second quarter, as the visitors seized control of the contest. Four players scored five goals in the second, two more from Campbell, who scored all three of his in the first half. The Cadets led 7-0.
  • Saint Joseph spent most of the game on defense, as Norwich wasted no time working the ball around in a scoring position. The crisp passing and cutting finally wore USJ out, as Norwich scored three more goals in the third and fourth periods to put the game away.
