Blue Jays Bully Chargers In GNAC Contest, 4-0

NEW LONDON, N.H.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Men's Soccer team dominated the competition Saturday afternoon, taking a 4-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Kelsey Field.

The Blue Jays were led by junior midfielder Charles Mputu (Hartford, Conn.), who had his first-career multi-goal performance, scoring back-to-back goals to all but seal it for USJ. He also assisted on the game's final goal, a strike into the lower right corner of the net by sophomore forward Dane Stephens (Jamaica), who finished with three points on the day (goal, assist). USJ scored two goals in the first half and two in the second, while also holding the hosts scoreless for the third time this season. Senior forward DeAnte Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.), the nation's leading goal-scorer, also found the back of the cage for the Blue Jays, his 13th goal of the season.

"This may have been our best overall performance of the season. We got ahead of them early and capitalized one some really good opportunities. We defended really well in difficult moments, and then showed some real quality going forward."


  • USJ was actually outshot, 14-12, but were far more efficient with their shot-making, holding a 10-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Blue Jays have won four of their last five matches.
  • Stephens remains the GNAC leader in assists with seven. He had a goal and one assist Saturday afternoon.


2 – The Blue Jays are 2-0-1 all-time against Colby-Sawyer, outscoring the Chargers 9-0 in the last two contests.


 – Sophomore goalie Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain) picked up his second career win (2-1-1) and his second shutout. He made four saves in 90 minutes.

CSC – Senior goalkeeper Lucas Boetsch (Rockport, Maine) took the loss (0-3-0), allowing four goals in a full 90 minutes. He also had five saves.
Men's Soccer is headed home for Senior Day on Tuesday, October 5 on the USJ Soccer Field at 4:00 p.m. The Blue Jays go head-to-head with Fisher College in the team's final non-conference match of the season.
