WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior forward DeAnte Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.) set a new program record with his 18th goal of the season in a 1-0 win for the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team, over the Saints of Emmanuel College (EMM), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on the USJ Soccer Field Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays have now won three in a row and five of their last six matches dating back to October 2.
A 78-minute stalemate left the fate of this one in the balance for quite some time. After some good opportunities on both sides of the aisle, junior midfielder Elijah Rowland (Hartford, Conn.), who scored a goal for the Blue Jays Saturday, found the returning Anderson, who broke the single-season goal record for USJ Men's Soccer with his 18th goal of 2021. Anderson scored 17 as a sophomore, setting the bar high for both he and those around him. It is of no surprise that Anderson, one of the nation's leading scorers all season, broke his own record in the process with still two matches to be played. The goal (and the moment) was enough to keep the Blue Jays out front to the final whistle. Sophomore goalie Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain) picked up his fourth win of the season in an impressive shutout performance finishing with three saves.
COACH QUOTE [Paul Wright] "A very strong team performance today. Emmanuel was a very determined team considering the playoff implications. There were many periods where we had to really defend well. We were able to stay patient, and have the upper hand in possession for the most part, until we broke them down in the final 15 minutes. We are very happy with this one."
The Blue Jays conclude its four-match GNAC home stand with a matchup against the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University on Saturday, October 23 at 3:00 p.m. on the USJ Soccer Field. It is the final home match for USJ in the regular season with significant playoff seeding pending Saturday's outcome.
