PAXTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's soccer team finished the 2021 regular season on a high note, dominating the AMCATS of Anna Maria College (ANM), 5-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match Wednesday afternoon at Caparso Field. With the win, the Blue Jays finish the regular season 11-4-1 (8-4-0 GNAC), the fewest losses in a single season in program history, and secure the fifth seed for the ensuing GNAC Tournament. The Blue Jays have now made the postseason tournament every year in the program's existence since USJ went coeducational in the fall of 2018.
Senior forward DeAnte Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn.) made it an even 20 goals on the season with two big scores in the match, tying him for the most in the conference this season with Joseph Thongsythavong from Norwich. It's also the most in a season in program history. Sophomore forward Dane Stephens (Jamaica) and junior midfielder Charles Mputu (Hartford, Conn.) also added a goal each. USJ scored four of its five goals in the first half, leaving little doubt as to who would come out on top by game's end (32-13 shots advantage). Sophomore goalie Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain) picked up the win between the pipes for the visitors, recording three saves without allowing a goal in 45 minutes of work to improve to 5-3-1 overall on the year.
Score: Saint Joseph 5, Anna Maria 1
Records: USJ 11-4-1 (8-4-0 GNAC), ANM 3-12-2 (3-9-0 GNAC)
Location: Caparso Field | Paxton, Mass.
COACH QUOTE [Paul Wright] "It was a very strong performance tonight. We started well, and capitalized on some early opportunities. We went on to control the majority of possession throughout the match. We are happy to be able to carry some momentum into the playoffs. Albertus Magnus will be a difficult game on Saturday, but we are excited for the challenge and are confident in our abilities."
The Blue Jays now prep for their highly anticipated GNAC Tournament matchup. The fifth-seeded Blue Jays will travel down to New Haven to take on their intrastate and conference rivals, the fourth-seeded Albertus Magnus College Falcons. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Celentano Field on Saturday, October 30. The Falcons beat the Blue Jays, 2-1, in their lone meeting this season, also in New Haven.
