Men's Swim Wins In Program Defining Performance, 143-47

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.— The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's swimming and diving team took care of business Tuesday night, knocking off Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) in a 143-47 dual meet dub, inside the Sports Center Pool.

The Blue Jays won nearly every men's event. Freshman Aaron Gauvin (Berlin, Conn.), sophomore Brendan Lynch (Watertown, Conn.), and sophomore Jacob Wyse (Broad Brook, Conn.) all won three events each. Senior newcomer Kevin Hobbel (Maasbracht, Netherlands) has made a huge impact in just two meets, taking two wins Tuesday night as well. The Blue Jays led by double digits throughout the meet.

Saint Joseph returns to the pool on Friday, January 24, in a dual meet at Trinity. The action kicks off at 5:00 p.m.

MEET INFORMATION
Score: Saint Joseph 143, Eastern 47
Location: Sports Center Pool | Willimantic, Conn.

COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker]
"The men were dominant. [Eastern] is a first-year program, and we are a second-year program. They are a state school with 5,000 kids, we've got 1,000, so I think it really speaks for itself the direction we are going in. It was a great win for us."

KEY MOMENTS

  • Gauvin got things going with a near 30-second victory in the 200 Free (2:04.79), good for nine points.
  • Lynch added wire-to-wire victories in the 50 Back and 50 Free, the former in 24.71 seconds.
  • Wyse was on-point throughout the 500 Free, touching the wall in 5:21.89, nearly two minutes ahead of second place.

NUMBER TO KNOW

143 – The most points the USJ men's swimming and diving team has ever scored in any meet in program history.
