Cross Country Hosts Blue Jay Invitational Saturday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior Mia Tompkins (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Eric Knox (Bristol, Conn.) both crossed the finish line first as the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's and women's cross country teams hosted the Blue Jay Invitational on campus on Saturday morning. The USJ cross country teams will be back in action next on Saturday, October 6th when they preview the 2018 GNAC Championship course at the Runnin' Monks Invitational hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Standish, Maine.

THE RUNDOWN - WOMEN

Tompkins claimed her second straight individual victory in as many weeks after she toured the Blue Jay Invitational 5K women's course with a winning time of 20:56, finishing ahead of the second-place runner by nearly four minutes. She averaged a blistering 4:11.2 pace per kilometer. USJ's junior Kristina Petit (Plainville, Conn.) finished second with a time of 24:53 to post a 1-2 finish for the Blue Jays and Bay Path's freshman Briana Serrao completed the podium and finished third with a time of 25:03.

Bay Path claimed the women's team victory as the only team with five scoring runners in the meet, posting a low score of 15 points. 

FOR THE BLUE JAYS

  • Senior Mia Tompkins (Meriden, Conn.) led the Blue Jays finishing the 5K with a winning time of 20:56 to post the individual victory.
  • Junior Kristina Petit (Plainville, Conn.) picked up the individual silver medal, crossing the line in 24:53.

THE RUNDOWN - MEN

Knox registered his first career cross country individual title after completing the Blue Jay Invitational 8K men's course with a winning time of 31:59, finishing five and a half minutes ahead of the second-place runner. The Blue Jays swept the podium placing freshman Mario Manon-Porcella (Torrington, Conn.) in second with a time of 37:35 and freshman Chamroeun Chhorn (Danbury, Conn.) in third with a time 39:44.

FOR THE BLUE JAYS

  • Freshman Eric Knox (Bristol, Conn.) led USJ with a time of 31:59.
  • Freshman Mario Manon-Porcella (Torrington, Conn.) was the second USJ runner to cross the finish line with a 37:35 effort.
  • Freshman Chamroun Chhorn (Danbury, Conn.) placed third turning in a time of 39:44.

UP NEXT
The USJ men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next on Saturday, October 6th when they preview the 2018 GNAC Championship course at the Runnin' Monks Invitational hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Standish, Maine. The women's race is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. with the men's race to follow at 12:00 p.m.
