Men 9th, Women 10th In GNAC Cross Country Championships

STANDISH, Maine — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's and women's cross country teams placed ninth and 10th respectively in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, held on the campus of Saint Joseph's College of Maine Saturday afternoon.

THE RUNDOWN – MEN 8K
In the men's 8K, Colby-Sawyer College took home the crown with consistency, with its top-three runners finishing second, third and fourth (Peter Bakker, Ben Jones and Liam Fleming respectively). Sophomore Matyas Csiki-Fejer of Suffolk won the overall in 26 minutes, 40 seconds (5:22 Mile Pace). Colby-Sawyer took the overall by a slim three points, scoring 56. Norwich impressed with a solid second at 59, and Suffolk rounded out the podium with 72 points.

FOR THE BLUE JAYS
Freshman David Kavanaugh (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Blue Jays to the line with a 15th place finish of 89 runners in 29:03 (5:51 Mile Pace). Sophomore captain Eric Knox (Bristol, Conn.) finished next for USJ in 38th with a 30:45 (6:12 Mile Pace). Sophomore Mario Manon-Porcella (Torrington, Conn.), sophomore Chamroeun Chhorn (Danbury, Conn.), and senior Alex Gillissen (Pomfret, Md.) also scored points for the Blue Jays, who placed ninth of nine GNAC schools with 213 points.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN 5K
In the women's 5K, Suffolk once again showed its versatility, winning this event as well, as senior Emily Manfra crossed the line first in 23:11 (6:13 mile pace). Colby-Sawyer showed its depth though, once again claiming the other two spots on the podium (Shannon O'Connell and Zoe Utton respectively), and the overall, sweeping both GNAC Championships in cross country for 2019. Colby-Sawyer women's cross country scored a meet-low 44 points, with Suffolk taking second this time with 62. Saint Joseph's College of Maine rounded out the women's podium with 104 points.

FOR THE BLUE JAYS
Freshman Morgan Hall (Norfolk, Conn.) led the Blue Jays across the line like she did all season, finishing in 60th out of 94 runners with a 29:50 (8:00 Mile Pace). Freshman Emily Wassick (Granby, Conn.) was next for USJ in 72nd with a 31:11 (8:22 Mile Pace), followed by junior Symantha Fazzino (Newington, Conn.), sophomore Taya Valdez (East Lyme, Conn.), and sophomore Andrea Pezzullo (Ashaway, R.I.), who all scored points for USJ. The Blue Jays finished in 10th place of 10 schools, scoring 286 points in the overall standings.

Last on the cross country calendar is a trip to the NCAA DIII New England Regional Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m.
