WINTHROP, Mass. - Freshman Cheyenne-Mone Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team was selected as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the GNAC front office on Monday afternoon. It marks the first time in Smith's career she recieves the weekly honor and back-to-back weeks a member of the Blue Jays earns the nod as classmate Silvana Barcomb (Middletown, Conn.) picked up the award last week.
Smith averaged 9.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 28.0 minutes per game to lead USJ in a pair of road GNAC games last week. Smith opened the week with 11 points, six rebounds, and a pair of assists on Tuesday night at Colby-Sawyer before going for seven points, eight rebounds and three assists on Saturday at Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
Smith currently leads the Blue Jays on the year averaging 9.5 points and 3.2 steals per game. She also is currently second on the squad averaging 6.0 rebounds per game. Her 3.2 steals per game also rank her third in the GNAC and 35th across all of Division III.
Smith and the Blue Jays will be back in action on Saturday, January 19 in another GNAC battle at Norwich. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
