WINTHROP, Mass. - Freshman guard Cheyenne-Mone Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league's front office on Monday afternoon. It marks the second time Smith has garnered the award in the past three weeks.
Smith had an impressive and consistent all-around week averaging 12.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.0 steals, 3.3 blocks, and 2.7 assists for USJ in a 1-2 week. The Wethersfield rookie shot 43.3% (13-30) from the floor and 63.2% (12-19) from the line in 31.3 minutes per game over the three-game road stretch. She opened the week with 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three blocks, and three assists in a 66-56 non-conference win on the road Monday at John Jay before going for 14 points, eight boards, three steals, five blocks, and an assist at GNAC foe Johnson & Wales on Thursday. Smith concluded the week with a 10-point, five-rebound, four-steal, three-block, and four-assist effort at Rivier on Saturday.
Smith and the Blue Jays will play at home for the first time in nearly a month, when they go head-to-head with Simmons in another GNAC matchup on Tuesday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m., inside the O'Connell Center.
