Blue Jays Win Streak Snapped By WestConn Tuesday, 71-61

Blue Jays Win Streak Snapped By WestConn Tuesday, 71-61

DANBURY, Conn. – It was a tough night for the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team, who saw its three-game win streak was snapped in a 71-61 setback to intrastate foe Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), in a non-conference contest inside Stephen Feldman Arena Tuesday night.

Sophomore forward Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.) followed up one good performance with another, recording a career-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Junior point guard and captain Amanda Fudge (Middletown, Conn.) added 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, but it wasn't enough, as WestConn unloaded on the Blue Jays early with a 14-7 lead after one quarter, forcing turnovers and finding quality shots on the offensive end. WCSU outscored USJ 22-8 in the second quarter, taking a commanding 21-point lead into the half.

The Blue Jays made their run in the second half little by little, and got to within four with less than two minutes to go after a huge three from Fudge to make it 62-58. The Blue Jays ran out of time and out of gas by the end though, the lead too much to overcome, as WestConn made timely baskets and free throws to put this one away. The key in this one was points off the bench. WestConn outscored Saint Joseph 30-2 in that department, and picked up their fourth straight win in the 2021-22 season.

Score: Saint Joseph 61, Western Connecticut 71
Records: USJ 3-3, WCSU 5-2
Location: Feldman Arena | Danbury, Conn.

COACH QUOTE [Wendy Davis] "I love how this team battled back in the second half - they have a lot of heart. Each of our six games this season we have started off slow. The coaches are going to make some adjustments in how we get this team properly prepared so that they are ready from the start moving forward."

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Saturday, December 4, in a battle with the Bulldogs of Dean College at 1:00 p.m., part of a doubleheader with men's and women's basketball for both squads. The men follow the women at approximately 3:00 p.m in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup.
