LEICESTER, Mass. – Junior Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) scored five goals and had one assist to lead the visiting University of Saint Joseph lacrosse team to a 16-6 non-league victory over host Becker College Monday evening at Alumni Field.
The Blue Jays of Saint Joseph even their record at 2-2 while the Hawks of Becker dropped to 1-5. USJ won for the second time in three days.
Saint Joseph junior Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) contributed two goals with a match-high four assists and sophomore Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.) scored four times. Freshman Eliza Doane (Suffield, Conn.) scored three goals for USJ and sophomore Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) scored twice.
Saint Joseph took control of the game early with five different players each scoring a goal in the game's first eleven minutes to put USJ up, 5-0. Leitao, Mastria, Doane, Gambino and Foster all finished strong at the net, seeming to score at will. After one Becker goal, the Blue Jays were at it again as Gambino and Mastria scored to stake the Blue Jays to a 7-1 lead at 12:04. With the first half winding down, Doane ran down the field untouched for her third strike of the evening with 37.3 left in the half and the Blue Jays led 12-2 at halftime.
Foster had a pair of goals after intermission for the Blue Jays as each team scored four times in a quieter second half.
Sophomore goalie Lindsey Dionne (Portland, Conn.) made eight saves on 14 Becker shots on goals for her second consecutive win in goal. USJ had the edge in total shots, 33-19.
Saint Joseph will host the Lions of Emerson College in a GNAC match, Wed. March 27 at 4 p.m.
