Lacrosse Earns First Win of Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of Saint Joseph senior Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) and junior Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.) scored four goals apiece to lead the lacrosse team to a 17-0 victory over Albertus Magnus Monday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game at Celentano Field.

USJ improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC. Albertus is 0-4 with all four losses coming in conference play.

Leitao scored the first of her three first-half goal to open the scoring 1:21 into the game and the Blue Jays rolled to an 11-0 halftime lead. Foster also had two assists and Leitao one. Haley Tufano (Farmington, Conn.) scored three goals for USJ, including one while a player down and Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) had two goals and four assists for the Blue Jays.

USJ outshot Albertus 38-13 overall and USJ goalkeeper Anne Pitoniak (West Haven, Conn.) made seven saves for the first shutout for the Blue Jays in program history.

Justine Mojsa (Newington, Conn.) scored two goals for USJ while Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) and Vicky Thai (West Hartford, Conn.) scored one apiece.

USJ next plays at Mitchell, Wed. March 27 at 4 p.m.
