Lacrosse Scores 24 in Another Win

NEW LONDON – University of Saint Joseph junior Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) led a scoring barrage with six goals as the lacrosse team defeated Mitchell 24-2 Thursday in a non-conference game at Alumni Field.

St. Joseph won its second consecutive game and is 2-3 overall on the season. Mitchell is 1-3. The Blue Jays tied a program record for goals in a game, set March 23, 2013 in a 24-9 win over Anna Maria.

Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.) had a huge game with five goals and five assists and Erika Leitao (Southington, Conn.) also scored five times and added an assist.

Francesca Mastria (Higganum, Conn.) scored for USJ just 43 seconds into the game to break the ice and a bunch of Blue Jay goals followed. Haley Tufano (Farmington, Conn.) scored for USJ just before the 10-minute mark that put the Blue Jays up 8-0 and Leitao's fourth goal of the first half, that came just four seconds before intermission, gave St. Joseph a 16-0 halftime lead.

Vicky Thai (West Hartford, Conn.) scored four goals for USJ and Mary Lam (Newington, Conn.) scored her first two collegiate goals. Justine Mojsa (Newington, Conn.) picked up a match-high seven ground balls for the Blue Jays.

USJ next plays Sat. March 29 at Rivier in a 1 p.m. GNAC game.
