WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Behind four goals and four assists from freshman Makenzie Dinger (Hingham, Mass.) the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's lacrosse team toppled the Bay Path University (BPU) Wildcats, 17-2, in the Blue Jays' season and home opener Saturday afternoon on the USJ Lacrosse Field.
Dinger posted an eight-point game in her first-ever collegiate action to lead the way for the Blue Jays, who won their season opener for the first time since they defeated Daniel Webster, 14-7, to start the 2017 campaign. The triumph also marks the first collegiate victory for first-year head coach Karen Nell, who joined the Blue Jays after serving as the head coach of girl's lacrosse at New Fairfield Public Schools for the last seven seasons.
Six different Blue Jays scored in the win with all six finishing with multi-goal games. USJ also registered seven assists, marking the most assists in a game since USJ recorded nine in a 19-5 victory over Daniel Webster on April 13, 2015.
Score: Saint Joseph 17, Bay Path 2
Records: USJ (1-0) BPU (0-2)
Location: USJ Lacrosse Field | West Hartford, Conn.
COACH QUOTE [Karen Nell]
"It was our first game so we obviously had some jitters early on, but it was just good to get out on the field and run around. We called a timeout early just to regroup and get everyone on the same page. Our focus was on making sure that a lot of people touched the ball and that we didn't focus so much on one player. So, we had a lot of different people score and we ended up having more assists in one game so far than in any game all of last year. Our goal is to be able to have it be a team experience as much as possible."
More information soon to follow...
The USJ women's lacrosse team is headed north for back-to-back games in Maine over Spring Break at Thomas College. USJ will first face off against UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. before playing the very next day against Thomas at 4:00 p.m.
