WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's lacrosse team made a statement in its season opening contest on a crisp Saturday morning, scoring more goals than any game in nearly six years, steamrolling the Mitchell College (MC) Mariners, 22-8, on the USJ Lacrosse Field.
The 22 goals is the most scored in any USJ women's lacrosse game since March of 2015 when they also netted 22 goals in a 22-7 victory over intrastate and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Albertus Magnus. The Blue Jays (1-0) channeled their inner pop-a-shot, netting 17 goals in the first half alone, the most in any half since 2013 (17 vs. Anna Maria 33/23/13).
Senior midfielder Symantha Fazzino (Newington, Conn.) had half a dozen goals herself, a double hat trick, and was one away from tying the all-time single-game school record. A trio of Blue Jays netted an additional four apiece, including senior attack and captain Abigail Horner (East Lyme, Conn.), who also dished out three assists in the win. Junior attack Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) did all she could for the Mariners, scoring five of the team's eight goals, but it wasn't enough, as the Blue Jays led from start to finish.
Score: Saint Joseph 22, Mitchell 8
Records: USJ (1-0) MC (0-1)
Location: USJ Lacrosse Field | West Hartford, Conn.
PLAYER QUOTE [Symantha Fazzino]
"I think our team chemistry really showed today. We have a great group of girls. We've been working really hard in practice, and I am super proud of how we played."
COACH QUOTE [Karen Nell]
"We moved the ball pretty well. We still have some things to work on, but we started moving the ball better as the game went on…we want to make sure everyone touches the ball to get the best opportunities. We clearly spread the goals around."
