WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Patricia Nolan (Portland, Conn.) scored two goals and added an assist and sophomore Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) had a goal and two assists as the University of Saint Joseph soccer team defeated Anna Maria, 7-0 in a GNAC game Saturday before a robust Tailgate Day crowd at Saint Joseph.
Saint Joseph improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC. Anna Maria is 3-3-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Barnick got the scoring started seven minutes in on a 10-yard shot off a feed from Nolan, who scored her first of the day about seven minutes later with an assist from Jess Saltzman (Bedford, N.H.). Nicole Mendelson (Southbury, Conn.) was next for USJ with a score from the 18 that snuck just under the crossbar and Tiana Saraceno (Plainville, Conn.) helped the Blue Jays to a 4-0 lead with her fourth goal of the year off an assist from Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.)
USJ added three more goals in the second half: Keeley Martin (Scotland, Conn.) scored her first of the season on a 35-yard blast; Courtney Cesca (Winsted, Conn.) scored from 20 yards after a pass from the flank to the middle from Barnick and Nolan knocked in the final goal – her team-leading eighth – also from Barnick.
"It was a great team effort on a special day," USJ coach Chris LeGates said. "It was nice to see the great support we had from friends, family and the community."
