Soccer Stopped by Suffolk on Saturday, 2-0

East Boston, Mass. -  The USJ soccer team fell, 2-0, in Great Northeast Conference action to the Suffolk Rams on the road on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Blue Jays fall to 3-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in GNAC play. Suffolk improves to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.

Suffolk scored two first half goals and held off all of the Blue Jay attempts in the second stanza to capture the 2-0 win. Suffolk's Jennifer Martin (Higganum, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) kept her league-leading goal tallies up as the forward broke open the scoreless game in the 18th minute. The junior's free kick from 25 yards out sailed over USJ's freshman goalkeeper Megan Ricci's (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) head to make it a 1-0 Suffolk lead.

Then, with 1:04 remaining before the intermission, Alexandra Nagri (Salem, NH/Catholic Central) picked up a long ball behind the USJ defense from Paola Ortez (Revere, MA/Revere). Nagri trapped the pass and finished with her left foot into the top right corner of the net to give the Rams a 2-0 cushion.

That would be all the Rams would need as they held on for the 2-0 victory. Suffolk's goalie, Kirsten Weiker (Durham, NH/Oyster Rivier) sealed her third shutout of the season for the Rams making eight saves between the pipes. Ricci finished with four stops for the Blue Jays.

Sophomore Morgan Skoly (Vernon, CT/Rockville) led the offensive attack for the University of Saint Joseph on the afternoon with five total shots, putting four on frame.

Both the Blue Jays and the Rams finished with 11 shots apiece in the match and each team also earned four corner kicks.

The USJ soccer team will return to action next on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Eastern Connecticut State. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. Suffolk will next play at Lasell on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m.
