Swimming Battles Westfield

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Veronika Latawiec (Newington, Conn.) won a pair of backstroke races and Rachel Mauthe (East Lyme, Conn.) earned a win in a distance event, but the USJ swimming & diving team dropped a dual meet to Westfield State College, 148-114 Friday at the Bruyette Natatorium.

Latawiec won the 50-yard backstroke in 31.13 seconds and the 100 back in 1:06.80. Mauthe won the 500 freestyle in 6:06.09 and was also second in the 1,000 free. The meet finished on a high note for the Blue Jays as Mauthe, Latawiec, Raelynne Andrews (Bristol, Conn.) and Tina Nguyen (East Hartford, Conn.) teamed to win the 200 free relay.

Annmarie Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) continued a solid debut season with two second-place finishes and a third and Gabriella Alberino (East Haven, Conn.) had one second and a third.

USJ swims Western New England at home in the final meet of the regular-season, Friday, Jan. 29, beginning at 6 p.m.
