WINTHROP, Mass. - Junior Gabriella Alberino (East Haven, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph women's swimming & diving team was named the GNAC Corvias Women's Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon for her efforts in the pool to help the Blue Jays edge the Western New England Golden Bears inside Bruyette Natatorium on Friday evening. It was announced via a release and on Twitter by the league's front office.
Alberino won two of the three individual events she competed in and was the anchor swimmer of USJ's 200 free relay team who came-from-behind to touch the wall first and secure a win for the Blue Jays in the 15th and final event in a 144-126 victory over Western New England on Senior Night on Friday evening. Alberino posted impressive swims all night starting with a gold medal swim in the 100 fly after touching the wall at the 1:07.38 mark. She followed that up with a time of 5:58.08 in the 500 free which was also good for first place. Leading 133-122 heading into the final event, the 200 free relay, USJ needed a win to secure the victory. Alberino was the anchor of the relay team and posted the best 50-yard split (27.14) to help the relay team come-from-behind and post a time of 1:51.63, just .49 seconds faster than WNEU's team for the dual meet victory. She also registered a runner-up finish in the 100 IM on the night swimming to a time of 1:07.63.
The USJ swimming & diving team concludes the 2017-18 season with a program-best dual meet record of 4-2. Alberino, along with a select group of USJ swimmers who posted qualifying times in their respective events, will next move on to compete at the New England Championships hosted at the University of Rhode Island from Feb. 15 to Feb. 18.
