WESTFIELD, Mass.—The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team dropped their first dual meet of the season to Westfield State University (WSU), 149-122, inside Ely Pool Friday night.
The Blue Jays picked up the pace in the final five events, winning all five, but fell behind early to the Owls, who showed their speed in many different events. Sophomore Alise Martel (Harwinton, Conn.), and senior Annmarie Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) finished 1-2 in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a 6:04.94 and 6:32.51 respectively, good for 13 points. USJ also swept the Three Meter Diving, as freshman Brielle Bergeron (Easthampton, Mass.), freshman Mackenzie Stotler (New Hartford, Conn.), and senior Elizabeth Sears (Bristol, Conn.) earned the Blue Jays 16 points.
Saint Joe's also won the 200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Martel, junior Taylor Houghtaling (East Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Amanda Thiel (Torrington, Conn.), and Stotler finished with a 1:55 flat, three seconds ahead of the second Blue Jay relay; freshman Kailey LaCasse (Berlin, Conn.), Bergeron, senior Richelle DiFronzo (Naugatuck, Conn.), and senior Mariah Markham (Bristol, Conn.).
The USJ women's swimming and diving team is at it again for Senior Night on Tuesday, January 22, against Eastern Connecticut at 6:00 p.m., inside the O'Connell Athletic Center, on the campus of USJ. This is the last home dual meet before the GNAC Championships next month.
