Bantams Best Blue Jays In Final Regular Season Meet

HARTFORD, Conn.— The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team were defeated by a very impressive Trinity College team in a dual meet, 173-86, Friday night at the Trinity Natatorium.

Freshman Alexia Weir (Hebron, Conn) and sophomore co-captain Alise Martel (Harwinton, Conn.) led the way for the Blue Jays with wins in the 100 Backstroke and 50 Freestyle, respectively. The Bantams got off to a great start, winning the first five events, and walked away with the win on their senior night.

Saint Joseph returns to the pool for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships on Friday, January 31 at a time to be announced. The three-day meet will be held at the Wellesley Sports Center, on the campus of Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Mass.

MEET INFORMATION
Score: Saint Joseph 86, Trinity 173
Location: Trinity College | Hartford, Conn.

COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker]
"I was pleased with our overall effort. We were not intimidated by their numbers or their talent. We raced and improved on personal best times, and even got a few wins in with Alise [Martel] and Lexi [Weir]. It was a good experience for our team, and we hope to continue to swim with them in the future."

KEY MOMENTS

  • Weir was fingertips away from a win in the 50 Back, finishing in 30.3 seconds, just over a tenth of a second behind the leader. That photo finish only fueled her, as Weir came back in the 100 Back with a sensational first-place swim in 1:04.74, two tenths of a second in front, good for nine big points.
  • Martel stopped the five-event win streak to open the meet for Trinity with a triumph in the 50 Free, claiming victory in 26.18. Every Blue Jay win was earned Friday, as Martel used her long reach to touch the wall just .15 seconds ahead of second place.

NUMBER TO KNOW

.18 – The two Blue Jay victories came by the slimmest of margins, an average of less than two tenths of a second.
