WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team is sitting seventh out of eight schools after the first of three virtual events this month, part of the Roger Williams University Virtual Swim Series.
The Blue Jays went to junior captain Alise Martel (Harwinton, Conn.) to deliver, and she did just that, scoring 19 points across two key events (50-yard Breaststroke, 50 Freestyle) to aid the Blue Jays in battle. USJ will look to capitalize on a tight race for the fifth position in the standings next time around.
Score (Meet 1 of 3): Roger Williams 533, Babson 269, Stonehill 170, Norwich 131, Colby-Sawyer 73, Albertus Magnus 69, Saint Joseph 62, Gordon 48
Location: Bruyette Natatorium (Virtual) | West Hartford, Conn.
COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker]
"Considering it was our first competition in over three months, I'd say the team swam well. It's really good for them to see teams like Roger Williams and Babson put up fast times, it motivates them to keep pushing in the pool."
- Martel took a team-best seventh in the 50-breaststroke with a time of 35.59 seconds, less than a second off a top-five finish. She earned 12 points. Martel followed it up with a top-10 swim in the 50-free with a 27.07, falling just short of a podium swim by a little more than one second. The virtual event featured 50 swimmers.
- Junior Shelby Cios (Rocky Hill, Conn.) also scored key points for USJ in the 50-breaststroke, 11 of them, with an eighth-place swim out of the 23 competitors in the event. She finished just over a second behind Martel with a 36.62.
