Cios Takes On Challenge In Blue Jay Pentathlon Friday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team competed hard inside its home pool, the Bruyette Natatorium Friday night, as senior captain Shelby Cios (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished in third position overall to lead the way for the Blue Jays.

Freshman Ailey Driscoll (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.) rounded out the top-five in this individual-based event. USJ swimmers were competing against each other in five 100-yard events and also against the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College (AMC), the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) and the Blazers of Elms College (EC). The sum of those events would provide the final standings. Luci Gutierrez-Gomez of AMC claimed the victory Friday with a final time of 6:06.67. Cios was the closest Blue Jay with a combined time of 6:19.59, picking up a pair of podium swims in the process, including a photo-finish in the 100 Breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:18.62, just two-tenths of a second from the win. Cios also finished third in the 100 IM. Driscoll followed up a great first performance last Saturday with three top-five swims in her home debut. She was a solid fourth in the 100 Breaststroke (1:23.81).

The Blue Jays will look to continue their momentum with another home meet, a dual meet, on Friday, October 29 against fellow Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe, Norwich University. The first swim is set for 6:00 p.m., on the campus of USJ.
