Women's Swim & Dive Stands Out In Home Dual Meet Friday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team fought hard, but ultimately fell to the Cadets of Norwich University (NOR) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference dual meet, held inside the Bruyette Natatorium, on the campus of USJ Friday night.

Senior captain Shelby Cios (Rocky Hill, Conn.) stepped up for the Blue Jays with three wins and a runner-up finish on the night. Cios won the 50-Yard Breaststroke, the 100 Breaststroke, and teamed up to win a highly impressive 200 Medley Relay. Cios was responsible for 97 all-important points on the meet. Her teammates were crucial in the 200 Medley Relay, which included a trio of freshman; Ailey Driscoll (Bristol, Conn.), Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Gabriela Targonska (Newington, Conn.). Freshmen have been impressing all season long so far, including on the diving board. Freshman Ella Warner (Putney, Vt.) finished first and second in the two one-meter diving events. She won the first with a score of 120.15, clear by more than 20 points over any Norwich diver. NOR bounced back with a win in the second diving event, where Warner was runner-up, but she was also the only freshman diver across both events. Targonska also stood out in the pool for the Blue Jays with three wins of her own, including the 200 Medley Relay, the 100 Backstroke, and the 100 IM, the latter done by just squeezing past her teammate Cios by .18 seconds (1:11.62).

COACH QUOTE [Brenda Straker] "Norwich is a powerhouse in the GNAC, so all the credit goes to them. We loaded our relays, and I think we were competitive in them. With the women, we won some very important races tonight. It was a nice 200-Yard Medley Relay team to set the tone for the rest of the meet."
