Tennis Team Opens Season

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Bay Path College Wednesday in the opener for both teams.

USJ fell behind 3-0 after being swept in doubles before winning four of six singles matches.

Saint Joseph freshman Emma Allen (Granby, Conn.) at No. 2, freshman Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, Conn.) at No. 3 and junior Lisa Wawrzynowski (Newington, Conn.) at No. 4 all won in straight sets. Sophomore Serena Sundara (Windsor, Conn.) won at No. 5 singles for the Blue Jays, earning the victory in a third-set tiebreaker.

USJ Coach Tom Walsh orchestrated a moving pre-match tribute to victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

"It was touching and well-done," USJ Athletic Director Bill Cardarelli said. "I think it says a lot about the program that our players were not only involved in something like this, but wanted to be involved."
