WINCHESTER, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph tennis team had its season come to an end with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Simmons in a semifinal match of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center.
Simmons, 8-5 overall will play No. 3 Johnson & Wales in Sunday's championship match. JWU upset No. 2 Suffolk, 5-4, in Saturday's other semifinal. USJ, which was seeded fourth, finishes its season 8-7.
Like in the regular season, nine matches are scheduled, three doubles and six singles, but the match ends when one team has enough victories to clinch the match. Simmons swept the doubles and won the first two singles matches that were completed.
Serena Sundara (Windsor, Conn.) had the best success of any USJ player, winning four games at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first set 6-3 against Mary Matthews of Simmons, she had a 1-0 lead in the second when the match concluded.
