WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Bay Path Wildcats in non-conference action on the USJ Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon. The Blue Jays didn't drop a set and won all but just one game in a dominating sweep of the Wildcats. With the victory USJ improves to 4-5 on the season, while Bay Path slips to 0-5.
The shutout win is the second straight for the Blue Jays as they haven't lost a set over they past two matches and have dropped just a mere four games over that span.
Sophomore Leah Nguyen (West Hartford, CT/Conard) and freshman Nina Urso (Berlin, CT/Berlin) recorded the first win for the Blue Jays with an 8-0 pro-set victory at No. 3 doubles to start the match. Sophomore's Sakinah Abdulsalam (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) and Ashley Savino (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) then paired together at No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 victory and at No. 1 doubles senior Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, CT/Platt) and sophomore Lucy Roberge (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) earned an 8-0 win to give USJ an early 3-0 lead.
In singles action, Savino blanked her No. 3 singles opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 before junior Tara Smith (Palmer, MA/Palmer) sealed the USJ victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Abdulsalam (No. 3), Roberge (No. 2) and Mauri (No. 1) also downed their opponents without surrendering a game 6-0, 6-0 and then freshman Domonique Carnot (Meriden, CT/Maloney) capped off the shutout with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
The USJ tennis team will be back in action next on Thursday, Oct. 6 when they take on Wentworth College. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be played at Eastern Nazarene College.
