Simmons Survives Early Blue Jay Surge, Defeats Tennis, 7-2

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team came out swinging, taking a 2-1 lead, but ultimately fell, 7-2, to the Sharks of Simmons College (SC), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Simmons improves to 4-1 in the GNAC and remains in second place, while USJ dips to 1-3 in conference play and fifth overall of seven schools.

Sophomore Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) led the way for the Blue Jays with a doubles win in No. 1 Doubles, as well as a great showing at No. 1 Singles, scoring six points in her singles match. Junior captain Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) also made contributions on the day, teaming up with Gilland for a doubles win, and scoring five points in her singles match. Sophomore Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) had a strong first set, but ended up dropping it late, 6-4.

COACH QUOTE [Karen Piazza] "I was very proud of this team today, especially in doubles. We have been working really hard on doubles in practice. [Simmons] had some very strong singles players, the girls hung in there, but [Simmons] didn't miss a shot. They were consistent on all accounts. I told them not to hang their head down. Each of them improved in their second set…that means they figured out what to do in order to get some points along the way."
