WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of Saint Joseph volleyball team opened its 2012 season by winning its opening match over host Gordon 3-2 Saturday at the Gordon Invitational.
Scores by set were 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13. The Blue Jays then lost to Framingham State 3-1 (13-25, 26-24, 9-25, 16-25) and Newbury 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 22-25).
Saint Joseph sophomore Ciara Perez (Manchester, Conn.) had a team-high 27 kills on the day and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Against Gordon, Perez had 11 kills and freshman Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) added nine. Sophomore Megan Williams (Lakeville, Conn.) had 18 assists for the Blue Jays and Elizabeth Tuazon (Mystic, Conn.) had nine digs.
Perez had eight kills against Framingham State while junior Rebecca DiPinto (Burlington, Conn.) had six and Vigue made 11 digs. Perez had eight more kills in the finale against Newbury and sophomore Marie DiPinto (Burlington, Conn.) served four aces. Williams finished the three matches with 42 assists and Tuazon had a team-high 24 digs.
Saint Joseph hosts Bay Path, Wed. Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
