Volleyball Opens 2013 Season

WENHAM, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph volleyball opened its season Saturday at the Gordon College Invitational.

USJ dropped three matches, but were competitive throughout. The Blue Jays lost to Gordon 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22), Newbury 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19) and Bridgewater State 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-17).

USJ senior Amanda Dondero (Mastic, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament team. She had a combined 11 kills on the day against only three hitting errors on 48 swings and added 28 digs and five blocks. Dondero had 14 digs against Bridgewater and six kills against Newbury.

St. Joseph junior Ciara Perez (Manchester, Conn.) had a team-high 17 kills on the day and added 26 digs. Megan Williams (Lakeville, Conn.) had 39 assists for the Blue Jays and Elizabeth Tuazon (Mystic, Conn.) had a team-leading 32 digs. Emily Vigue served up nine aces on the day including five against Newbury.

Saint Joseph hosts Mount Holyoke and Mitchell Sat. Sept. 7 in a tri-match beginning at 10 a.m.
