Dejshona George is in her sixth season as Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Saint Joseph.
She was an assistant coach to former head coach Val Briggs for the previous three seasons. She was also an assistant basketball coach for two seasons. Additionally, Coach George currently serves as a coach for Northwest Juniors Volleyball Club out of Torrington.
Prior to joining the USJ coaching staff, Coach George was the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Watkinson High School in Hartford for three seasons.
Coach George has received her IMPACT certification and CAPI Certification from the USA Volleyball organization.
In Coach George's first season, she helped spark a turn-around season as USJ improved from a two-win season in 2010 to eight victories. USJ matched their eight wins the following season despite the loss of three key players and improved to nine wins in 2013. The 2014 saw a major improvement as the Blue Jays went 16-7 and qualified for the GNAC Tournament for the first time in seven years. The 16 wins were the most victories in a season for the program in 14 years.
Coach George received the prestigious Woman in Sport Award in 2013, presented annually to a former USJ student-athlete who has continued to be a role model for young girls and women through sports.
Coach George is a 2005 graduate of Saint Joseph, where she played both volleyball and basketball. She earned an undergraduate degree in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in 2007 in Business Management Strategies.
As a player, George was named Most Valuable Player on the volleyball team for the 2003 season and Most Improved Player in 2001.
“I take a lot of pride to coach on the same floor on which I played,” George said. “I guess I’m a life-long Blue Jay. I look into the girls’ eyes and I see myself at that age. And they’re looking at me the same way I looked out at who was in the place I am now.”
