Bristol, R.I. - Senior Kaneen Gomez-Hixson (Wethersfield, Conn.) paced the University of Saint Joseph cross country team with a second place individual finish in the Blue Jays season opening meet at the Roger Williams Invitational held at Colt State Park. She led the Blue Jays to a ninth place team finish out of 13 teams in the field.
Gomex Hixson's runner-up performance came in 19:21.82 with an average mile time of 6:14.0 across the 5k course. Sophomore Mia Tompkins (Meriden, Conn.) was the second Blue Jay to cross the finish line. She finished 25th overall and crossed the time stamp at 21:12.37.
Junior Mary Anderson (Granby, Conn.), freshman Charlotte Eberhardt (Thomaston, Conn.) and senior Alyssa Vereneau (Newington, Conn.) rounded out the top five scoring runners for the Blue Jays in their first competition of the 2016 season. Anderson and Eberhardt finished 56th and 57th turning in respective times of 22:59.58 and 23:00.41. Vereneau posted a a 75th place overall finish with a final time of 23:43.19.
Kristina Petit (Plainville, Conn.) and junior Jessica Jordan (Wallingford, Conn.) also competed for USJ in the race. Petit finished 75th with a time of 23:47.80 and Jordan raced to a time of 25:36.46, good for 108th overall.
The USJ cross country team will return to action next Saturday as they travel to the Trinity Invitational. The start of the race is slated for 10:30 a.m.
