Men's Hoops Stays Hot, Topples Mitchell, 83-56

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  It was an all-around performance for the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team, which held the Mitchell College (MC) Mariners to their second lowest point total of the season, and picked up the win, 83-56, in an exhibition contest inside the O'Connell Center Friday night.

A dozen Blue Jays scored on the night, including a season-high 44 points off the bench. Senior forward Jordan Powell (Middletown, Conn.) once again led the charge, dropping a game-high 16 points (8-10 FG), and grabbing six boards. Junior forward and captain Jake Sullivan (Branford, Conn.) added a season-best 13 points, in addition to solid work on the defensive end. Junior guard Jalen Benson (New London, Conn.) scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting for MC.

The Blue Jays took off running in this one, taking their first double-digit lead with 11 minutes to go in the first half. USJ never trailed, and the Mariners were unable to establish a big-time run to even get it to single digits, being held to 32% shooting (21-65 FG) and 27% from three (6-22) on the night. USJ led by 16 at the break, and didn't look back.

53 – The Blue Jays shot a season-high 53% from the field (30-57 FG). They kept it over 50% in both halves.


  • The Blue Jays won the battle of the bench, outscoring the Mariners 44-20.
  • USJ dished out a season-high 20 assists. Junior guard Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) had 11 of the 20.
  • The Mariners were held to just two fast break points.

The Blue Jays will host Fisher College in an exhibition contest on Wednesday, March 17 for their 2020-21 season finale inside the O'Connell Center at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Jays defeated Fisher, 91-56, in their last meeting in the opener of the inaugural USJ Holiday Tournament back in December 2019.
