NEWTON, Mass. – Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) went a combined 4-for-5 with her sixth home run of the season and Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) struck out 11 in the opener as the University of Saint Joseph softball swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader 3-1 and 8-2 Saturday at Lasell.

The Blue Jays win in the second game was their 28th of the season and set a new single-season school record. The previous record was set by the GNAC championship team of 2000 which went 27-9. USJ is 28-10 overall and 16-6 in the GNAC. Lasell is 8-26 and 5-17.

Gall had two hits and an RBI in each game and her fourth-inning home run in the first game was her sixth of the year, which eclipsed her own previous single-season school record of five, set in 2011. She also extended her career record with her 15th home run in three seasons.

Sciglimpaglia allowed three hits in a complete game for her 11th win of the season. She struck out a career-high 11 and walked one. USJ got on the board in the first inning. Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn) singled, advanced on a wild pitch and fly out and scored on a ground out by Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) Gall homered in the fourth inning and after Lasell closed to 2-1, USJ scored an insurance run in the seventh. Patti Sciglimpaglia had a leadoff double and came home on a two-out single by Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.)

Hummel allowed five hits in a complete game for win number 14 on the season in the finale. She struck out three and walked one.

USJ again scored in the first as McCall singled, stole second, moved up on a sacrifice by Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.) and scored on Hummel's sacrifice fly. Valerio walked in the third and Gall drove her home with a double. In the fourth, Mary Sciglimpaglia walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.)

Leading 3-1, USJ put the game away in the top of the sixth with five runs. Patti Sciglimpaglia had an RBI-single and Hillary LaRosa (Meriden, Conn.) and Valerio had RBI-doubles in the rally.

Saint Joseph plays its final regular-season home games of the season Sun. April 21 when it hosts Rivier in a GNAC doubleheader at noon. Seniors Emily Hummel and Stephanie Valerio will be honored between games.
