Monks Top Blue Jays, 68-48
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead three players in double figures as the St. Joseph's College (Maine) women's basketball team defeated the University of Saint Joseph, 68-48 Saturday in a GNAC game at the O'Connell Center.
The Monks of St. Joseph's College improved to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the GNAC; USJ is 10-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) had 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Blue Jays. Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists for USJ.
USJ never led, but played a closely-contested first half and trailed 26-23 at halftime as Framski and Devon Diliberto scored six points apiece before intermission.
The first eight minutes of the second half were also close and after a free throw from senior Terese Cerins (Manchester, Conn.), USJ trailed 40-37 with 11:57 remaining. But the Monks slowly edged away from there. A 19-6 run over the next seven-plus minutes put SJC ahead 59-43 with 4:17 remaining. Six different players scored for St. Joseph's College in that span, led by Cahill's six points.
Danielle Shufelt (Sutton, Verm.) scored 15 points for St. Joseph's College and Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) had 10 points and eight rebounds. Diliberto scored nine for USJ and Claire Consonni (Bristol, Conn.) had seven.
The University of Saint Joseph plays at Pine Manor, Monday Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. and next plays home, Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
