WINTHROP, Mass. - Junior Nina Lestrud (Torrington, Conn.) and sophomore Makenzie Dinger (Hingham, Mass.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's lacrosse team each picked up a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly award, it was announced on Monday afternoon in the league's first weekly report of the 2021 season. Lestrud was named the GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week and Dinger was tabbed the GNAC Rookie of the Week. The Blue Jays are off to a 1-1 start to the 2021 campaign.
Lestrud has been solid between the pipes for USJ to open up the 2021 season and earns her first career GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week award in the process. The junior from Torrington, Conn. has racked up a GNAC-best 20 saves to start the season and sports a 14.5 goals against average. In the 2021 season opener on March 6 versus Mitchell, Lestrud made a career-high 12 saves and posted a 60.0% save percentage in what would be a 22-8 season-opening win for the Blue Jays. She followed that up with eight more saves in a setback to Eastern Connecticut on March 13.
Dinger has been instrumental in helping USJ get off to a 1-1 start to the 2021 season. The sophomore out of Hingham, Mass. has tallied a total of seven points on six goals and an assist across the opening two games. In the 2021 season opener, Dinger erupted for four goals and added an assist in an eventual 22-8 triumph over Mitchell College on March 6. She followed that up with a pair of goals in a setback to a tough Eastern Connecticut program on March 13.
The USJ women's lacrosse team is back in action next on Saturday, March 27 in a rematch with intrastate opponent Mitchell College. The Blue Jays and Mariners are set for an 11:00 a.m. opening draw down in New London.
