NORTHFIELD, Verm. – Katie Mirabella (Seymour, Conn.) and Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) scored goals and a strong effort on the defensive end made them stand up as the University of Saint Joseph women's soccer team defeated Norwich 2-0 Wednesday in a GNAC game.
After mounting steady offensive pressure throughout the first half, the Blue Jays finally got on the board in the 35th minute when Mirabella buried a shot into the top left corner of the net from the top of the 18-yard box off an assist from Patricia Nolan (Portland, Conn.)
The Blue Jays added another goal in the 68th minute when Barnick scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year with another assist from Nolan.
Saint Joseph outshot Norwich 29-9 and freshman goalkeeper Melissa Dodge (Watertown, Conn.) stopped all seven shots she faced to earn the shutout. The Blue Jays back four of Samantha Prescott (Meriden, Conn.), Lindsay Cifaldi (Wolcott, Conn.), Kristin Whitman (South Windsor, Conn.) and Sarah Domschine (Cheshire, Conn.) were stout in keeping Norwich's scoring opportunities to a minimum.
"That group did a great job shutting down one of the best players in the league in Brittany Casey," Saint Joseph coach Chris LeGates said. "Anytime you go up there and get a result, you're happy to take it."
Saint Joseph improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC. Norwich is 1-3-1 and 0-1-1.
The Blue Jays play their 2012 home opener Sat. Sept. 15, taking on Johnson & Wales at 1 p.m.
