Volleyball Comes Oh So Close

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph battled through two very close matches Monday, but came up on the short end of two five-set verdicts in a GNAC tri-match at Albertus Magnus.

Against Suffolk, Saint Joseph rallied from two one-set deficits, but the Rams prevailed in the fifth, 15-13. Ciara Perez (Manchester, Conn.) had 16 kills, 10 digs and six aces for the Blue Jays and Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) had nine kills, seven aces and 10 digs.

Against Albertus, Saint Joseph fell behind 2-0 after losing two decisive sets, 25-16 and 25-14. But USJ rallied gamely, toughing out a 29-27 third-set win and a 25-21 victory in the fourth, before Albertus took the fifth, 15-11.

Perez had 19 kills and 13 digs and Vigue had 16 kills and 14 digs. Amanda Dondero (Mastic, N.Y.) had five aces, 10 digs and six kills. Elizabeth Tuazon (Mystic, Conn.) led the defensive effort on the day with 23 digs against Albertus and 18 against Suffolk. Setter Megan Williams (Lakeville, Conn.) had 47 assists against Albertus and 35 in the opener.

Saint Joseph hosts Simmons and St. Joseph's of Maine in a conference tri-match beginning at 10 a.m.
