Late Rally Not Enough as Baseball Falls to JWU, 10–6, at Home on Thursday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) baseball team dropped a non‑conference matchup to Johnson & Wales University (JWU), 10–6, on Thursday afternoon at the USJ Baseball Field. With the result, the Blue Jays slipped to 10–6 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 6–9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Johnson & Wales wasted no time setting the tone, scoring twice in the opening frame to take an early 2–0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays answered in the bottom of the second inning, cutting the deficit in half when senior outfielder Dom Scalia (Northford, Conn.) came around to score on a wild pitch.
  • The Wildcats seized control of the game from there, erupting for eight runs over the next three innings to build a commanding 10–1 advantage.
  • USJ began to chip away in the eighth inning. Senior infielder JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.) lined an RBI single up the middle to score sophomore infielder Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.). Moments later, Scalia launched a towering two‑run home run to left field, trimming the deficit to 10–4.
  • The Blue Jays continued to battle in the ninth. Fox delivered again with a two‑RBI single up the middle, plating junior infielder Tyler Carlstrom (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and senior infielder Ryan Shaw (Ellington, Conn.) to make it 10–6. The late rally fell short, however, as JWU held on to secure the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Fox, Scalia, and Shaw each recorded multi‑hit performances.
  • Fox paced the offense with a team‑high three RBI.
  • Junior pitcher Tyler Slack (Attleboro, Mass.) turned in a strong relief effort, tossing four innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out five.
