Field Hockey Rallies in Fourth but Falls in OT at Manhattanville, 3-2, Monday Night

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team rallied late but dropped a 3-2 overtime decision on the road to Manhattanville University in non-conference action on Monday night at GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, N.Y. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 4-2 overall, while the Valiants improve to 1-4.

Trailing 2-0 early in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays stormed back with a pair of quick strikes. Senior midfielder Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.) put USJ on the board at the 51:19 mark, finishing off a feed from senior forward Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.). Less than two minutes later, sophomore forward Grace Kociszewski (Thomaston, Conn.) buried the equalizer, via an assist from freshman forward Juliana Meglio (Watertown, Conn.), to knot the score at 2-2.

Manhattanville's Shannon Keena provided the difference, netting her second goal of the night off a setup from Fiona Doherty just 2:43 into the first overtime period to lift the Valiants to their first win of the season.

The Blue Jays dominated statistically, outshooting Manhattanville 23-13, including a 16-6 edge in shots on goal, and holding a 17-14 advantage in penalty corners. Manhattanville goalkeeper Hannah Doherty stood tall with 11 saves, while USJ's junior goalkeeper Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) finished with three saves.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at Colby-Sawyer College. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field in New London, N.H.
