WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team was unable to find the back of the cage, falling for the first time this season at home, 2-0, versus Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) in non-conference action Monday evening at the USJ Field Hockey Field. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 4-4 overall, while the Warriors improved to 3-5.
ECSU wasted little time getting on the board, striking in the first quarter when Audrey Molin scored her fifth goal of the season at the 5:03 mark off an assist from Jenna Boardman. The Warriors doubled their advantage midway through the second period as Grace Barlage tallied her fourth of the year at 21:57, assisted by Rebecca Minaya, to make it 2-0.
Despite trailing, USJ pushed the pace after halftime and created several opportunities, especially in the fourth quarter when the Blue Jays generated six shots and seven penalty corners. However, ECSU goalkeeper Veronica McKenna stood tall, making three saves to preserve the shutout.
For the game, ECSU held a 16-12 advantage in total shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Both teams finished with 12 penalty corners. Senior midfielder Kaitlin Trudeau (Bernardston, Mass.) led the Blue Jays with five shots, including two on target, while sophomore forward Grace Kociszewski (Thomaston, Conn.) added two shots with one on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) recorded six saves for USJ, including three in the second quarter to keep the game within reach.
