WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team earned a 4-1 victory over the Sage College (Sage) Gators in non-conference action Thursday evening at the USJ Field Hockey Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 6-5 on the season, while the Gators dropped to 4-5. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays used a dominant offensive attack and timely scoring to pull away from the Gators late in the second half. 
  • Freshman forward Juliana Meglio (Watertown, Conn.) led the way with a goal and two assists, bringing her season points total to 13.
  • She opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 12:40 mark of the first quarter.
  • Senior forward Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.) added her third goal of the season 1:32 into the second quarter, giving USJ a 2-0 lead.
  • Sage responded with a goal from Skyler Van Wormer to cut the Blue Jay lead to 2-1 entering halftime.
  • After a scoreless third quarter, sophomore forward Grace Kociszewski (Thomaston, Conn.) scored her team leading 10th goal of the season off a feed from Meglio, making it a 3-1 lead for the Blue Jays.
  • Meglio would pick up another assist, setting up senior forward Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.), who tapped in her 5th goal of the season at the 10:19 mark of the fourth quarter, adding some insurance for USJ.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • USJ dominanted in shots, outshooting the Gators 32-4, including a 21-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Blue Jays held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
  • In goal, junior Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) wasn't tested all that much in the win, seeing just 1 shot make it on goal.
  • Gators' goalkeeper Olivia Brand turned away 17 of 21 shots on goal.

The Blue Jays will look to keep the momentum going when they return to action on Saturday, October 4th, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home contest versus Rivier University.
