Field Hockey Beats Rivier at Home, 4-1, Saturday Evening
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team earned a 4-1 victory over the Rivier University Raiders in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday evening at the USJ Field Hockey Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in GNAC action on the season, while the Raiders dropped to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in GNAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Raiders got on the board first at the 2:41 mark of the opening quarter, as Mary Kelley found the back of the net off an assist from Shaelyn Burke.
- The Blue Jays responded almost four minutes later when freshman forward Juliana Meglio (Watertown, Conn.) contnued her stellar stretch of play, burying her sixth goal of the season with the assist going to senior forward Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.).
- Barker notched her second assist of the night, setting up senior forward Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.), who netted the first of her two goals in the game.
- Komonaj added her second goal of the game at the 5:49 mark of the second quarter, finishing a setup from sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Trudeau (Bernardston, Mass.) to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
- After a scoreless third quarter, sophomore forward Grace Kociszewski (Thomaston, Conn.) broke through with her team-leading 11th goal of the season, converting a long stretch pass from senior midfielder Devan Fox (Granville, Mass.) to give USJ a comfortable 4-1 advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- USJ outshot the Raiders 18-9, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Raiders held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.
- In goal, junior Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) stopped two of three shots on goal, earning her seventh win of the season.
- Raiders' goalkeeper Lily Gifford made six saves for the visitors on the day.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays will look to keep their winning streak alive when they continue GNAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 8, traveling to face the Bulldogs of Dean College. The matchup is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Grant Field in Franklin, Mass.
