Field Hockey Season Concludes with GNAC Quarterfinal Loss at Colby-Sawyer Saturday
NEW LONDON, N.H. — The sixth-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) field hockey team saw its 2025 campaign come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling 6-0 to third-seeded Colby-Sawyer College (CSC) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Quarterfinals at Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field. With the result, the Blue Jays finished their season with a 10-9 overall record, while the Chargers improved to 11-6 and advanced to the GNAC Semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday night in Standish, Maine.
Colby-Sawyer opened the scoring late in the first quarter, taking a 1-0 lead at 12:13 when freshman Jillian Fredette buried the opening goal off an assist from sophomore Brooke Farquhar. The Chargers held that edge through halftime before erupting for four goals in the third quarter to break the game open. Farquhar struck first in the frame at 33:18, followed by tallies from freshman Zoe Dries (42:30) and senior Cecilia Ponzini, who scored twice in a span of just over a minute (43:57, 45:00) to make it 5-0 entering the fourth. Farquhar capped the scoring in the closing moments (59:21) on Fredette's second assist of the afternoon.
The Chargers outshot the Blue Jays 13-5 overall, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal, and led 6-0 in penalty corners. USJ junior goalkeeper Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) made three saves in the effort, while CSC graduate netminder Addy Araneo recorded a three-save shutout.
Senior midfielder Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.) led the Blue Jays offensively with two shots on goal, and freshman forward Juliana Meglio (Watertown, Conn.) added one.
The loss marked the end of another successful season for the Blue Jays, who posted back-to-back double-digit win totals and postseason appearances for the first time in program history. USJ is now 1-5 all-time against Colby-Sawyer.
